What is Karma?
Karma is defined as a cause in Buddhism, Hinduism, or dharmic religions – understood in relation to the law of cause and effect. The philosophical definition of karma differs due to the traditions of the eastern regions but its main message is that the actions of a single individual create its future experiences. Everyone is responsible for their own lives, happiness, or suffering which they bring to themselves and others.
There is no “accident” in the universe. Everything we do has its effect which will be manifested in the future, and also the cause that has been manifested in the past. Thanks to free will we create the law of cause and effect through thoughts, words, and deeds.
Hinduism
In Hinduism, karma is understood in two ways. Some denominations closely associate karma with God, while others find it more independent. Followers of Vedanta, the atheistic school of Hinduism, believe that Easwara (supreme God) has a role in managing karma.
In contrast, other Hindu schools claim that karma is the law of cause and effect and depends on the will of the supreme God. A summary of theistic views is expressed in such karma quotes as: “God does not make someone suffer without a reason or make anyone happy without a reason. God is very just and gives you what you deserve”.
Hinduism divides karma into three types:
- Sanćita (accumulated karma)
- Prarabdha (fruitful karma)
- Kriyamana (current karma)
Every kriyamana karma becomes sanćita karma when a given action is performed. Out of the accumulation of sancti karma, only some serve one life. Those activities that bear fruit expire and are called prarabdha karma.
Hindus often say that karma is doing a bad deed that needs to be worked out or something good should be done in return.
Buddhism
Karma is a basic and extremely important concept in Buddhist schools. The law of cause and effect is called in the Pali language kamma-vipaka (action – fruit). In Buddhism, this law is universal and impersonal.
The factor determining the moral value of a particular action is the accompanying will or intention of the individual. If your will has harmful roots it will bring harmful fruit. They are:
- thirst (or greed)
- anger
- ignorance
In Buddhism, it is assumed that actions whose results would cause suffering in the next incarnation can be supplanted by new, good actions before death. The law of karma also indicates that only a being, who accumulated their causes goes through such experiences.
The universal law of karma
So, apart from religion and transcendental philosophies, we can successfully treat karma as a universal principle of causality: every action has some effect. The consequences of actions can be negative or positive; it usually depends on the intentions and the course of action. It doesn’t matter at all what philosophy of life you adhere to.
You may even be an atheist, but karma will also apply to you. That’s just how the universe works. Cause and effect. Well, but it’s very general.

4. The law of liability
All events are the result of our decisions and actions. So we are responsible for ourselves. We should not blame failure, the universe, God or other people for failures – these are not the sources of the problems. We are responsible for every decision made, for every word, gesture or thought. Whatever we do, we collect the crops of our actions.
5. The law of growth
Everything that lives, develops and increases; also a human soul. Whatever we do, we change. Nobody stays the same forever. We learn and gain more and more wisdom; we become more aware.
Spiritual development is not about changing the world or other people, converting to a religion or convincing someone to take your views. The essence of spiritual development is shaping yourself. In order to change our lives, we should not focus on the elements of the external world, but on our own interior. Develop them.
6. The law of unity
Even if a person does something that seems meaningless, in fact, it is just as important as the heroic deeds sung in songs and legends. Even a tiny grain of sand in the desert is as important as the whole planet; after all, without him, the world would be completely different.
Although it may seem a bit strange, even the smallest things are of great importance. Everything in the universe is connected to each other. Each step leads to the next step, every turn to the next, word to a new word, deed to a different deed – and without end. The first step in the journey is as important as the last.
7. The law of recollection
